An adjective is a word that describes a noun or a pronoun and adds to the quality of the noun. Describing words are called adjectives. 

Example- tall boy


There can be other describing words such as-fat,short, etc.


Adjectives can be used to compare the qualities in a person animal or thing.


Examples

1. Harry is a tall boy.

2. Vishal is taller than Harish. 

3. Vicky is the tallest.


In the sentences above, there is a comparison of the quality i.e. tall.


In English grammar,  it is called degrees of comparison. It means that two or more people or things are compared for having a quality and to assess who has more of that quality.


Let's look at the following examples which shows positive   (Ist), comparative (2nd) and superlative (3rd) degree.


✍ Rule 1 : Add '-er' and '-est' to make the 2nd and 3rd degrees respectively. 


1. able- abler- ablest

2. base- baser- basest

3. big- bigger- biggest

4. bold- bolder-boldest

5. bright- brighter- brightest

6. clever- cleverer- cleverest

7. clean- cleaner- cleanest 

8. dear- dearer- dearest 

9. deep- deeper- deepest

10. dense- denser- densest

11. empty- emptier- emptier

12. fat- fatter- fattest

13. fast- faster- fastest

14. few- fewer- fewest

15. fond- fonder- fondest

16. great- greater- greatest 

17. hard- harder- hardest

18. high- higher- highest 

19. humble- humbler- humblest

20. keen- keener- keenest

21.  kind- kinder- kindest

22. less- lesser- least

23. light- lighter- lightest 

24. long- longer- longest

25. near- nearer- nearest 

26. noble- nobler- noblest

27. poor- poorer- poorest

28. pure- purer- purest

29. rare- rarer- rarest

30. rich- richer- richest

✍ Rule 2 : Add 'more' and 'most' to make the 2nd and 3rd degrees respectively. 

1. active- more active- most active 

2. attractive- more attractive- most attractive 

3. beautiful- more beautiful- most beautiful 

4. brilliant- more brilliant- most brilliant 

5. capable- more capable- most capable 

6. careful-more careful- most careful

7. courageous- more courageous- most courageous 

8. difficult- more difficult- most difficult 

9. diligent- more diligent- most diligent

10. doubtful- more doubtful- most doubtful 

11. famous - more famous- most famous 

12. faithful- more faithful- most faithful 

13. harmful- more harmful- most harmful 

14. helpful- more helpful- most helpful 

15. ignorant- more ignorant- most ignorant

✍ Rule 3 : All are different. 

1. bad - worse- worst

2. far- farther- farthest 

3. good- better- best

4. late - later - latest

5. late - latter- last

6. little- less- least

7. low - lower - lowest

8. many- more- most

9. much- more- most

10. old - older- oldest 

11. old - elder- eldest

12. some- more- most

13. up - upper - uppermost



✍ Rule 4 :  Those ending in 'y' or -ly'  

add 'ier' and 'est' after removing -y'.

1. busy - busier - busiest

2. easy - easier - easiest

3.  happy- happier- happiest 

4. heavy- heavier - heaviest

5. holy- holier- holiest

6. jolly- jollier - jolliest

7. pretty - prettier- prettiest 



✍ Rule 5 : Double the last letter when a consonant comes after a short vowel sound. 

1. big - bigger - biggest

2. fat - fatter - fattest

3. hot - hotter - hottest

4. mad - madder - maddest

5. red - redder - reddest

6. sad - sadder - saddest

7. thin - thinner - thinnest 

8. wet - wetter - wettest
