Chapter # 1 : Rent for Water
1. Why did the farmer buy the well?
Ans. He bought the well so that he could water his fields.

Ans. He bought it from his neighbour.

Ans. The neighbour forbade the farmer to draw water from the well as he had sold the well, not its water.

Ans. The passengers and mail are precious loads because the human beings as well as their belongings are important and valuable.

Ans. The trains run through dawn and dusk.

Ans. Freight cars mean trains here.

1. What time of the year was in the story?
Ans. It was winter time.
2. What happened to the ponds and lakes?
Ans. They all were frozen.
3. What did Akbar want to know?
Ans. Akbar wanted to know if a man could do anything for money.
4. Why did the brahmin accept Akbar's challenge?
Ans. The brahmin was very poor. His family was starving and he needed money. That's why he accepted Akbar's challenge.
5. How much money did Akbar agree to give to the brahmin?
Ans. Akbar agreed to give him 2000 gold coins.
