Ans. Mrs Hudson was Sherlock Holmes' landlady. She went to Watson's house to tell him that his friend, Sherlock, was critically ill. She wanted Watson to come and save his life.

Ans. He got the illness from some Chinese sailor. He got it when he was working on a case at a place near a river. But as we know it was all a made-up story.

3. What was Holmes' condition when Watson saw him?

Ans. His condition was serious.  He had fever and red cheeks. His hands were twitching. 

4. Why did he not let Watson examine him?

Ans. Holmes was pretending to be sick. Dr Watson would have known the truth if he had examined him.

5. Who was Culverton Smith? Why did Holmes want him for the treatment of his disease?

Ans. Culverton was a tea planter. Holmes wanted to trap him. 

6. Who was Victor Smith? What had happened to him and how?

Ans. Victor was Culverton's nephew.  Culverton had killed him.

Ans. Inspector Morton arrested Smith.  Culverton had killed Victor Smith.

Ans. The two women discussed about town life and village life. They were sisters. The elder one praised town life but the younger one praised country life.

Ans. The boy was fat and plump. That's why he was called  'Sausage'.

2. What is duck-diving? How is it taught?

Ans. Duck- diving means diving into water in the manner of a duck.  A brick is thrown into water and the learner is asked to bring it out. In this way, duck-diving is taught.

3. Why couldn't Sausage see inside the water?

Ans. Due to weak eyesight, he had to wear glasses. But he had to remove it while diving. That's why he couldn't see properly inside the water. 

4. What did Sausage do with the tin-box?

Ans. He took the tin-box to his home and placed it on the mantelpiece. He put his coin- collection in it. He wanted to keep it as long as he lived.
