One of the books of Abraham Lincoln , borrowed from a neighbour, was the ‘Life of Washington’. Washington had been the first President of the United States and was called the ‘Father of his Country’. Abraham liked the book so much that he took it up to his bed with him and put it between the cracks in the logs of his hut, so that he could read it as soon as he woke up in the morning. At night it rained and water came through the cracks and damaged the book. The owner of the book made Lincoln work in his fields for three days to pay for the damage. However, this did not stop Lincoln from borrowing books to read. He used to say, ”My best friend is the man who will lend me a book I haven’t read.”
