1. Why was the Happy Prince called the Happy Prince?

Ans.  The Happy Prince lived in a palace . No sorrow was allowed to enter there. His life was a bed of roses . He did not know what tears and miseries were.  He always remained happy. Thus he lived, and thus he died. So his courtiers called him the Happy Prince. 


2. What should be the ultimate aim of science?

Ans.  The ultimate aim of science should be to make life worth living on the earth.  No doubt, science has given men the comfort of all material things. But the qualities of charity, mercy , tolerance and justice are more important than material things. These non-material things can make the world a better place to live. 


3. Write  a small paragraph on 'The Proper Use of Human Energy'.

Ans.  Every human being has an immense source of Energy.  Sadly, an average man uses only twenty percent of his mental power.  If human beings learn to use their unused power, they can face and master all circumstances.  Thus, through the proper use of human energy,  complete peace can be attained.


4. Both Jim and Della gave each other the gift of rare love. How? Explain. 

Ans.   Jim and Della had two precious things. One of them is Jim’s gold watch and the other one is Della’s long hair. Jim sold his gold watch to buy a set of combs for Della, and Della sold her beautiful long hair to buy a platinum watch chain for Jim. Although these gifts were of no use, this shows their rare and deep love for each other. 



5. What is the basic difference between the position of women in society in the ancient times and now?

Ans. In ancient times, women enjoyed a very high position. No auspicious ceremony was considered complete without their participation. They were never looked upon as objects. Now women are not given their due regard. The incidents of dowry killings and female foeticide are matters of shame for us.


6. Give a pen-portrait of Phatik. 

Ans. Phatik is a fourteen- year-old boy. He is the ringleader among the boys of his village. He has a fertile mind. He keeps thinking of new mischiefs. His mother is fed up with him. She sends him away to Kolkata with her brother. Now Phatik begins to feel like a fish out of water. He longs to go back to his village home. But he has to wait until the holidays of  his life come!


7.  Write a short note on the making of the earth.

Ans.  Long, long ago, the earth and the other planets were part of the sun. Somehow, some bits of the sun shot away from it. One of these bits was our earth. To begin with,  it was as hot as the sun.  But very slowly it started to cool and then life began to appear on it.


8. 'Liberty is not a personal affair only, but a social contract.' Explain. 

Ans. Liberty  is not a personal affair; it is a social contract. Unrestrained personal liberty can lead to chaos only. Our personal liberty should not intrude into the liberty of others. It should not become a nuisance for others. In order to sweeten the journey of life, we should have a reasonable regard for the liberty of others.
