 C10 Do as Directed, 11 Sets









📌📌 Answer Key: 


(i) the 

   “The ” is the definite determiner that fits the idiomatic expression the odds of life.


(ii)  to 

   The preposition “to” is used with “bring luck” when indicating the recipient (his family).


(iii) could 

    “Could” is the correct modal for polite requests in indirect speech (“asked if they could”).


(iv)  Although

    The conjunction “although” introduces a contrast between limited means and being honest.


(v) Leaving home early, she arrived here on time.

  The participle “Leaving” combines the two actions into one sentence with a non‑finite verb.


(vi) What you say, I agree to.

   Or

  I agree to what you say.

   “What” is used to transform the clause into a noun phrase acting as the object of agree to.


(vii) Why was the poor man laughed at (by you)?

      The active question is changed into a passive construction, moving the focus to the man.


(viii)  The boy said to the teacher, “Forgive me.”

         Indirect speech is converted to direct narration, quoting the exact words.


(ix)  I have lived in Chandigarh since 1978.

      Present perfect “have lived” is used with “since” for an action continuing to the present.


(x) His story was, in several ways, improbable.

  Commas set off the interrupting phrase in several ways for clarity.

The subordinate clause is *because she is kind to me*.


(vii) *Let her be allowed to sing.*

Passive voice: *Let her be allowed to sing*.

She should be allowed to sing.


(viii) Indirect narration: The mother asked her son why the teacher had punished him.


(ix) *The policeman held up his hand.*

Past Indefinite: The policeman *held* up his hand.


(x) *The teacher said, “Boys, don’t make noise.”*

Punctuated sentence: The teacher said, “Boys, don’t make noise.”
