Comprehension Passage (Q. 61–65)
Directions (Q. 61–65):
Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below.
Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges confronting humanity in the twenty-first century. It refers to long-term shifts in global temperatures and weather patterns. While some climate change occurs naturally, scientific evidence overwhelmingly confirms that human activities have been the dominant cause since the mid-twentieth century. The burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas releases enormous quantities of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. These gases trap heat from the sun, causing the Earth's average temperature to rise — a phenomenon commonly known as global warming.
The consequences of unchecked climate change are far-reaching and severe. Rising sea levels threaten low-lying coastal nations and islands. Glaciers and polar ice caps are melting at an unprecedented rate. Extreme weather events such as floods, droughts, and cyclones are becoming more frequent and more intense. Biodiversity is under serious threat, with numerous species facing extinction due to the rapid alteration of their natural habitats. Agricultural productivity in many regions is declining, putting food security at risk for millions of people.
Addressing climate change requires urgent, coordinated global action. The Paris Agreement of 2015 marked a landmark step, in which nearly 200 nations pledged to limit the rise in global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels. Transitioning to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric power, adopting sustainable agricultural practices, and investing in energy efficiency are among the key strategies recommended by scientists and policymakers alike. Individual actions, such as reducing energy consumption, minimizing waste, and choosing sustainable lifestyles, also play a meaningful role in mitigating the crisis.
