Sentences
A sentence is a group of words which makes complete sense.Here are some examples:
- We love our country.
- Where is my book?
- Wait for me.
- What a fine hit!
- May you win the race!
📌 Remember:
- Every sentence begins with a capital letter.
- A full stop or period (.) is placed at the end of every imperative or assertive sentence.
- A mark of exclamation (!) is placed at the end of every optative or exclamatory sentence.
- A question mark (?) is placed at the end of every interrogative sentence.
Kinds of Sentences :
1. Assertive sentence: An assertive sentence is the one that makes a statement or assertion. It may be affirmative or negative and positive sentence.
Examples:
- This pen is very costly.
- I have not seen this picture.
- I get up early in the morning.
- You pray to God everyday.
- I should stick to my promise.
2. Interrogative sentence : An interrogative sentence is the one which ask a question.
Examples:
- Where are my shoes?
- Has he taken the test?
- Am I strong?
- Are you on leave today?
- What is your name?
3. Imperative sentence: An imperative sentence is the one which expresses a command, a request ,an advise or an entreaty.
Examples:
- Shut the front door.
- Do not keep my book.
- Let me go.
- Always speak the truth.
- Be nice to everyone.
4. Exclamatory sentence: An exclamatory sentence makes a statement that conveys some sudden strong emotion or excitement.
Examples:
- How beautiful the flower is!
- What an idea!
- Bravo! You have done well.
- How stiff the paper is!
- What a wonderful opportunity!

Reason: It asks a question, indicated by the.
word “Shall” at the beginning.
3. We must try to be on our best behaviour for the next two months.
Type: Declarative sentence
Reason: It states a fact or opinion about an obligation.
4. The dog ate the biscuit.
Type: Declarative (assertive) sentence.
Reason: It makes a statement or gives information about an action.
5. Wow, I have won the lottery!
Type: Exclamatory sentence.
Reason: It expresses strong emotion or excitement, marked by the exclamation.
6. How far away is the park from the school?
Type: Interrogative sentence.
Reason: It asks a question seeking information.
7. Let's go back soon or we will miss the train!*
Type: Imperative (with a warning) sentence.
Reason: It gives a warning and ends with an exclamation.
8. Stop asking questions.
Type: Imperative sentence.
Reason: It issues a direct command or instruction.
9. Let's go to the party!
Type: Imperative (exclamatory) sentence.
Reason: It suggests an action (command) expressed with excitement.
10. The students wondered why they were going to the amusement park.
Type: Declarative (complex) sentence.
Reason:* It states a thought or fact and contains an embedded question.
